Born in Highgate, North London, England, Sir Roderick David Stewart was the youngest of five siblings. His father, Robert Joseph Stewart, worked as a Scottish master builder, and his mother was Elsie Rebecca Gilbart. A music enthusiast from a young age, he was encouraged by his father, who gifted him a guitar in 1959 at the age of six. Alongside his interest in music, he was also passionate about football. As he matured, his love for music intensified. He began spending time with folk singer Wizz Jones, where he picked up the harmonica, and in 1963 joined a band called The Dimensions, playing the harmonica and sometimes providing vocals.
