Background

Renowned American singer-songwriter Prince gained international acclaim during the 1980s, particularly with albums such as “Purple Rain” and “1999.” He was born as Prince Rogers Nelson in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 7, 1958, to jazz musician John Nelson and jazz singer Mattie Shaw. Prince developed a passion for music from his childhood and learned to play guitar, piano, and drums independently. After his parents’ separation, he relocated with his neighbors, the Anderson family. It was during high school that he formed a band named Grand Central, collaborating with Andre Anderson and Morris Day. Prince secured his first recording contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1978.

The hit album “Purple Rain,” released in 1984, served as the soundtrack for the film of the same name, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. In 1985, he followed it up with “Around The World In A Day,” which included popular tracks like ‘Pop Life’ and ‘Raspberry Beret.’ He launched his eighth studio album, “Parade,” in 1986, featuring the massive hit ‘Kiss,’ which topped the music charts.

After his music group disbanded, Prince embarked on a solo career with “For You” in 1978 and “Prince” in 1979. Notably, he played nearly all instruments on both albums. His second release also marked his first top 20 pop hit, the laid-back ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover.’

Prince’s career faced numerous challenges amid rising tensions with Warner Bros., his record label. In 1993, he adopted the unpronounceable glyph O(+> as a form of rebellion against the label, creatively combining male and female astrological symbols, which he retained until 2000.

On April 21, 2016, Prince passed away at the age of 57 due to an accidental overdose of fentanyl at his residence and recording studio, Paisley Park, located in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
