Early Life

Born on January 19, 1992, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Malcolm James McCormick, who is professionally known as Mac Miller, grew up in a family where his father worked as an architect and his mother as a photographer. He was raised in Pittsburgh and celebrated his Bar Mitzvah as part of his Jewish heritage. His education included attending Winchester Thurston School and Taylor Allderdice High School.

During his high school years, Miller was actively involved in music and sports. He participated in various sports and social events, and he was self-taught in playing several instruments like the guitar, piano, and drums. Initially aspiring to be a singer in his teenage years, he transitioned to rapping at the age of 14, aiming to become a hip-hop artist.

While still studying, he released his mixtape titled “But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy” in 2007 under the moniker “Easy Mac.” He also collaborated as part of a rap group named The Ill Spoken, releasing another mixtape called “How High” in 2008. Following that, he put out two more mixtapes, “The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown” and “The High Life.” At just 17, in 2010, Miller signed with Rostrum Records, a label situated in Pittsburgh. By late 2010, his career reached a significant turning point.

career breakthrough occurred with his first sold-out and highly successful tour. In November 2011, Miller released his debut album, “Blue Slide Park,” which made its entrance at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 144,000 copies in the opening week.

His sophomore album, “Watching Movies with the Sound Off,” was launched in 2013, along with the establishment of his record label. Following the conclusion of his contract with Rostrum Records in 2014, he secured a $10 million recording contract and distribution deal with Warner Bros. Records. In 2015 and 2016, he released two additional albums, “GO:OD AM” and “The Divine Feminine.” Miller’s fifth and final album, “Swimming,” released in August 2018, received critical acclaim. This album posthumously garnered a Grammy Award nomination for ‘Best Rap Album’ in 2019.

Miller faced challenges with substance abuse, often sharing how he used various harmful drug combinations to alleviate stress. His struggles with drug addiction were recurrent themes in his music, which he discussed openly. In 2016, he began dating pop singer Ariana Grande—who had been his friend for years. Their relationship concluded amicably in May 2018. Tragically, Miller passed away in September 2018 from an accidental drug overdose in his Los Angeles home.
