In the realm of rock ‘n’ roll, John Deacon stands as music royalty. Born John Richard Deacon on August 19, 1951, in Leicester, England, he is the son of Arthur Henry, who worked for the Norwich Union insurance company, and Lillian Molly, a housewife. He received his education at Beauchamp Grammar School in Oadby, excelling academically. In 1965, he started a school band named The Opposition but transitioned four years later to study electronics at Chelsea College in London. Initially a rhythm guitarist, he later shifted to the bass guitar, which solidified his fame.
In 1971, John connected with Roger Taylor and Brian May, soon becoming the youngest member of their band. Their debut album came out in 1973, followed by two more albums in 1974. Deacon notably wrote one of Queen’s iconic tracks, ‘Another One Bites the Dust,’ which gained immense popularity since its release in 1980. Throughout the 1980s, he collaborated with various bands, notably the supergroup Man Friday & Jive Junior, featuring Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy), Simon Kirke (Bad Company), and Martin Chambers (The Pretenders). He also partnered with Freddie Mercury on solo projects, alongside fellow legendary English rock star Elton John.
Following Mercury’s passing in 1991, Deacon composed and performed less frequently, ultimately retiring in 1997 after a few concerts with Queen, during which Elton John filled in as vocalist. He returned briefly that same year to record the final track for the band. Post-retirement, Deacon has remained out of the spotlight, turning down the offer to attend Queen’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, to celebrate the band’s 40th anniversary, a newly discovered damselfly species was named in his honor. It was reported by May that Deacon appreciated Joseph Mazzello’s representation of him in the band’s biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018), starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury.
