Background
Born on February 11, 1969, in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston is the daughter of Greek-born actor John Aniston and actress Nancy Dow. One of her maternal great-grandfathers, Louis Grieco, had Italian roots. Her mother’s heritage includes English, Irish, Scottish, and some Greek elements, while her father’s lineage traces back to Crete, Greece. Jennifer has two siblings: an older maternal half-brother and a younger paternal half-brother. Actor Telly Savalas, who was one of her father’s close friends, served as her godfather. During her childhood, she moved to New York City. Even though her father worked in television, her parents advised her against watching, but she still found ways to indulge in it. At the age of six, she began her education at a Waldorf school, and her parents separated when she was nine. Aniston later attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts in Manhattan. At 11 years old, after discovering her passion for acting at the Waldorf school, she joined the drama club and learned under acting coach Anthony Abeson. Her roles included parts in Lorraine Hansberry’s “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” and Anton Chekhov’s “Three Sisters.”
It was her portrayal of Rachel Green on the hit sitcom “Friends” that marked Jennifer’s Hollywood breakthrough following a series of minor roles in film and television. “Friends”
was a tremendous success, with Aniston’s signature hairstyle on the show becoming widely known as ‘The Rachel’ among the audience. For a decade, she was part of “Friends,” during which she earned $1 million per episode in the last three seasons before the show wrapped up in 2004. Her performance in the series earned her both a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award. Following that, she starred in a variety of dramas, comedies, and romantic comedies. Some of her notable films include “Bruce Almighty” (2003), “The Break-Up” (2006), “Marley & Me” (2008), “Just Go With It” (2011), “Horrible Bosses” (2011), and “We’re the Millers” (2013). Furthermore, films like “Office Space” (1999), “The Good Girl” (2002), “Friends with Money” (2006), “Cake” (2014), and “Dumplin’” (2018) marked some of her best-received performances. In 2019, she made a return to television as both a writer and star of “The Morning Show,” an Apple TV+ drama series, for which she received another Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 2000, Aniston wed actor Brad Pitt. However, media rumors of Pitt’s affair with co-star Angelina Jolie led the high-profile couple to separate in 2005. Aniston was linked romantically to her co-star from “The Break-Up,” Vince Vaughn, and musician John Mayer. In August 2012, she announced her engagement to actor and director Justin Theroux, known for his roles in several comedy films including “Strangers with Candy” (2005), “Your Highness” (2011), and “Wanderlust” (2012). The couple married in a private ceremony at their Bel Air home in August 2015. However, in February 2018, they publicly declared their separation in a joint statement.
