Background

Tahliah Debrett Barnett originated from the quaint town of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, England. Her mother, of Spanish descent, was English, while her father was a Jamaican musician whom she met for the first time at the age of 18. Raised primarily by her mother and step-father, an avid Jazz enthusiast, she acquired the nickname Twigs early in life due to the cracking sound of her bones. By the age of 13, she had already played with a Jazz band and had earned a scholarship to a private all-girls Catholic secondary school, where she felt isolated as the only mixed-race pupil. This experience inspired her to write songs influenced by classic Jazz and soul artists alongside post-punk and new wave styles.

Prior to the release of her second album, she engaged in various projects that highlighted her experiences in filmmaking and choreography. In October 2014, she debuted “#throughglass,” a short film crafted as a promotional tool for Google Glass, which she directed and included several of her songs. In 2015, she presented ‘Congregata,’ an interpretive dance performance inspired by her album “LP1.” The following August marked the return of her M3LL155X (“Melissa”) E.P., created in collaboration with producer Boots, which reached #63 on the Billboard 200. Following 2015, she embarked on a continued musical evolution, releasing albums like “Magdalene” in 2019 and collaborating with various artists, including A$AP Rocky and 645AR. Furthermore, she made her acting debut in the film “Honey Boy” that same year. After the lighter 2022 mixtape “Caprisongs,” coming after her second album “Magdalene,” it became clear that she stands as one of the most skilled performers of her generation.
